OFFICIAL: Lacazette to leave Arsenal after dissappointing season
The French striker was called to be the next Thierry Henry at Arsenal, but after five season he has left more disappointment than successes
Some things seem like they were simply better in the 1990s. The Jordan-led NBA, the iconic romcoms, the boybands... and Frenchmen at Arsenal Football Club. Such is the case for Alexandre Lacazette, the latest would-be Thierry Henry.
The Frenchman arrived at Arsenal in 2017 for 53 million euros from youth side Lyon, becoming their record signing at the time. He had scored 37 goals in 45 matches for Lyon that season and was looking set to become the next iconic French player for the Gunners.
However, his perfomances quickly became underwhelming, and when the opportunity to pick up Pierre Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund came up, Arsenal didn't hesisate, breaking their most-expensive signing record twice in the space of six months.
Still, agaist all odds, Lacazette shifted his style and thrived next to Aubameyang, becoming more of a provider and linking player, dropping from the lone striker spot to open up space for the Gabon star on the wings. Together, they won the 2020 FA Cup and things seemed to be on the up.
Now, however, Aubameyang has departed to Barcelona and Lacazette was left looking like a very different striker to the one Arsenal signed back in 2017; a pass-first, goals-shy striker who went through some serious goal droughts, his time at Arsenal was coming to an end.
And so, it was confirmed by Arsenal that his time at the North London club has come to an end. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the player has already reached verbal agreement with Olympique Lyon and his return to his boyhood club is set to be confirmed soon.
