ALL DONE: Arsenal closes down brilliant signing
The Gunners went after one of Portugal's most promising young midfielders for their second signing of the summer
It has taken them some time, but Arsenal have finally sealed their first signings of the transfer window. Mikel Arteta's side has been linked with a myriad of players as they look to bridge the gap of points that got them to miss out on a return to Champions League football, with North London Derby rivals Tottenham edging them to that fourth spot on the table. Now, after officially starting their transfer window with the signing of Brazilian Marquinhos, they've followed it up with Portuguese midfielder Fabio Vieira.
As reported by The Athletic's David Ornstein, the 22 year old midfielder from Porto is set to join the Gunners. The move will go through as soon as the player completes his medical examinations, with a reported fee of 35 million euros, plus another 5 on add ons. Vieira would sign a five-year deal, although there are no reports on the wages he would get.
The signing is reported by Ornstein to be done at the behest of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who is reportedly a big fan of Vieira's style of play. The Portuguese plays mostly as an attacking midfielder, and is known for his ability to hold up the ball, provide through balls and dribble past defenders.
Vieira, who has been a key performer for Porto lately, ended last season with 7 goals and 16 assists in 39 matches played. He was part of Portugal's Under 21 side, which he captained, reaching 20 appearances and 13 goals.
