Arsenal didn't move FAST ENOUGH and now he's going nowhere
Mikel Arteta and his staff could miss out on an important target due to moving too late
Everything is looking great at Arsenal. The Gunners are looking to carry on their good form after a successful start to the season. One way to do that, could be to seal their move for Youri Tielemans; the team led by Mikel Arteta was one of numerous teams said to be interested in the midfielder, although a deal has not yet taken place, and it may be too late now.
The Belgium international's contract expires in 2023 and has been connected to moves away from the King Power Stadium ever since the end of the previous campaign. However, according to reports, Arsenal have heard from Leicester City that they will not be selling Tielemans this summer, with UK newspaper The Times is reporting that the Foxes would rather let him go next summer on his own at the end of the season than sell him in the coming weeks.
At Arsenal circles, Tielemans was seen as a cheap and easy option, who was ready for the taking at any moment and was therefore not a priority. Now it's looking like the Gunners may have overplayed their hand.
Simply put, Brendan Rodgers does not want to lose the former Monaco player because he sees him as a crucial part of his team for the season that just started. It's not an odd take, following the words his had about Wesley Fofana's potential move to Chelsea, were the manager insisted they needed money, but weren't contemplating getting it by selling their top players.
"It's not ideal but it's happened before, players have left here for free before," Rodgers commented last week on the prospect of Youri Tielemans moving at the end of the season on a free transfer. "He wouldn't be the first one, but at this moment in time it's about keeping an eye on the team and the squad, making sure they are ready".
