The Villans have a new coach: Unai Emery set for return to England
Days after confirming the sacking of Steven Gerrard, Aston Villa have announced their new head coach
Aston Villa are getting a new manager and his name is Unai Emery. The former Arsenal manager is making a return to the Premier League. The Spanish boss is now set to leave his position at Villareal in LaLiga and make a comeback to England.
In a bit of news that surprised many, the Villans are set to get their new head coach rather quickly after sacking Steve Gerrard. Names like Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and even Diego Simeone did the rounds, but recently the reports that Unai Emery will be the man chosen to take over at Villa Park have gathered steam and now things look to be done.
"Aston Villa are now closing in on Unai Emery appointment, confirmed. Deal is considered set to be completed on a long-term project. Villarreal sources again think he's gone, as reported earlier", wrote transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, while also adding that "Villarreal, informed that €6m release clause will be activated by [Aston Villa]".
This would mark Unai Emery's return to the English top flight since being sacked by Arsenal in late November 2019, after a terrible run of seven matches without a win and with the London club in 8th position. Since then, many have pointed to Emery's struggles to communicate in English as one of the problems with his tenure at the Emirates Stadium, one that was plagued with clashes with stars, most notably Mesut Ozil.
Since leaving the North London club, however, Unai Emery has found enormous success with Villareal, winning the 2021 Europa League title as well as reaching the 2021-22 Champions League semifinals. In his long career, which started all the way back in 2004 with Lorca Deportiva in the Spanish third tier, Emery has managed to win the Europa League four times, as well as winning the 2017-18 Ligue title and a plethora of other cups with PSG.
