Atlético needs to SELL and one of Simeone's FAVOURITES in on the market
The Spanish club faces a similar problem to Barcelona and will need to sell, whether they want it or not
Atlético Madrid is in trouble. It may come as a shock since it's been the situation thats gathered most atention, but Barcelona isn't the only club that needs to sell. The side coached by Diego Simeone are at a similar predicament, and that could force some moves.
While the situation at the Colchoneros isn't as bad as it has been with their Catalan rivals, it is worth mentioning. Recently, club president Miguel Cerezo confirmed to Spanish newspaper AS the need the club has to move some of their assets: "We need to sell for 40 million and that's where we are. The market is not easy, it is very difficult. And the economic situation you already know how it is".
Atletico expected some help from Juventus and Chelsea, as both Álvaro Morata and Saúl Ñíguez had been on loan at each club respectively and had options to buy at a combined 70 million euros. However, both have now returned to Atlético, and the club has to work to recoup the money they need.
Much like is the case with Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong, the Colchoneros may have to sell one of the players they're least keen on moving, simply due to lack of interest into their other options. The name that's at the top of everyone's list is Thomas Lemar.
Simeone isn't happy to let the Frenchman move, but his contract is expiring in one year, and renewal talks haven't worked so far. With Atlético unwilling to leave him walk away for free in 12 months time, Lemar's name has come up as an option to fix the economic needs of the club.
However, Lemar just like De Jong, is happy at his current club and would prefer to stay put. "Atlético made us a first offer at the end of last year, we responded with a counterproposal in January. Since then, we no longer have news from the directors. Thomas has never refused to extend his contract",explained recently Arthur Poupel, the player's agent.
For the moment, there haven't been any offers for Thomas Lemar, who strugged when he first joined Atlético, but slowly became a good performer and earned a starting spot. Despite his injuries, last season was one of his best with the red-and-white stripped shirt, reaching 4 goals and 6 assists across all competitions.
