Since his retirement in 2013, Jamie Carragher has been working as a pundit and analyst for UK media network Sky Sports, playing the less strongly opinionated counterpart to the bombastic Gary Neville as well as writing for various other outlets and publishing two books.

However, his heart will always follow the colours he defended from the age of ten: Jamie Carragher remains every bit as much a Liverpool fan and staunchly defense the Merseyside club and players from the sidelines as he did on the pitch.

In an article recently published on the website of UK newspaper The Telegraph, Carragher makes the case for who should be winner of the next Ballon d'Or. With Lionel Messi failling to hit the ground running with PSG and Robert Lewandowski perhaps not as dominant as he was in the prior seasons, it is widely believe the prestigious award will go to Real Madrid man Karim Benzema. However, according to Carragher it should go to one of his rivals in the upcoming Champions League final.

"If Mane continues his current form he may help inspire Liverpool to four trophies, including the FA Cup against Chelsea this weekend. He will also be the Premier League's most likely winner of the 2022 Ballon d'Or", writes Carragher. "Mane scored Senegal's winning penalty in the African Cup of Nations, and repeated the trick to take his country to the World Cup. He must be a frontrunner".

In Carragher's opinion, when it comes to football and nothing else, there shouldn't be any other candidates. "Providing the votes are based solely on football criteria [...] it already looks like a shoot-out between Mane and Real Madrid's Karim Benzema", he writes. "That means there may be more at stake than a Champions League winners' medal when they meet in Paris".

Sadio Mané joined Liverpool from Southampton in 2016 and has so far 119 goals in over 200 matches. In a team often overshadowed by the exploits of Mohammed Salah or Virgil Van Dijk, Mané is enjoying one of his best seasons ever, and is without a doubt one of the contenders for the men's football's most prestigious award.
