HISTORIC: Sergio Busquets set to leave Barcelona
The Spanish midfielder could be leaving the Catalan giants after fifteen seasons at the club
It will be historic: this could be the very last season of Sergio Busquets at FC Barcelona. The Blaugranas are going through a deep revolution under Xavi Hernandez, who's had the ungrateful task of shifting many of the club's greats from the latest era into lesser role, bringing him to clashs with Dani Alves, Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique. Now we could be adding Busquets to that list, as the one-time best holding midfielder in the world is reported to be set to leave the club.
On June 30, 2023, the day his current contract expires and after fifteen seasons of serving as the focal point of all that has happened and is happening on the field since 2008, Sergio Busquets could be putting up his boots at Barça. The player has been considering it for a while, conscious of the fact that father time catches up with all and that, at 34, he still has time to go on a new journey over the pond.
While it is true that he has never stopped giving his all for the squad, during the past several seasons at Camp Nou Busi has felt enormous wear and tear. Although the club insisted on extending his contract, the player has made the decision to say goodbye. In time, it will become clear whether this is a goodbye or see you later.
Busquets will do everything in his power to ensure that his farewell to the club of his life will be in the best possible circumstances, although it will be hard to match his current coach's last season, with Barcelona winning it all under Luis Enrique.
When Pep Guardiola gave him his first start against Racing Santander on September 2008, no one could have foreseen that, fourteen years later, Sergio Busquets would continue to lead the FC Barcelona midfield after having won everything, absolutely everything, both at Barça as in the Spanish National Team. Now, he seems set to continue his career at the MLS, with an offer from Inter Miami, who have been after him for some time. It is truly the end of an era.
