"The media and the club are spreading lies": De Jong FURIOUS with wages reports
The Dutchman continues to be at odds with the Barcelona board and he's now firing back
The drama between Frenkie de Jong and FC Barcelona keeps on going. The Dutch midfielder has seemingly been at odds with his "dream club" forever now, with a plethora of subjects from his wages and a potential move to his role at the squad up for debate. Now De Jong spoken with media from his homeland and added more fuel to the fire.
Frenkie de Jong has defended his case against pressure from Barcelona
The former Ajax has now refuted recent claims that he is the highest-paid player at Barcelona since Lionel Messi. The Dutchman argues that due of the pay reductions he underwent during the previous three years, the sum of money owed to him by the club appears to be substantial.
"In each of the first 3 years I played here, I cut my salary", explained De Jong, "So eventually money has to come back and it will drop on your normal salary so of course it will look bigger. I think many people don't understand this". The centre midfielder was on the eye of the storm all transfer market long due to the pushes from Manchester United to sign him, while his own club wanted him to lower his wages.
According to De Jong, he's simply the target of a media operation: "The numbers the media are spreading are fake. I don't think I am [Barcelona's best paid player since Messi]. There has been a campaign. Look, I never spoke a word myself. But the club or the media that's part of the club has been spreading lies and a lot is fake".
Still, the Dutch international has always been clear about his desire to remain with the Catalan giants: "I decided in May that I wanted to stay. My opinion never changed during the whole period. I remained calm. But then, you know, the pressure started coming. From the newspapers, from the president, from everywhere. But I wanted to stay at Barça, so it never bothered me".
De Jong has long been at odds with Barcelona
In truth, Frenkie de Jong has lived under pressure ever since Joan Laporta returned to the Barcelona presidency, with reports of the club going as far as threatening legal action due to "ilegal items" in his contract. While this has prompted many players and former legends to come to his defence, one has to wonder how long he'll be able to withstand the friendly fire at Barça.
