Barça could've signed him for 10 million - now he's worth 70 MILLION
Barcelona missed on a signing on the cheap and now the would have to pay 7 times more
When he was a star in River Plate, the likes of AC Milan, Manchester United and Manchester City asked about him. Finally Enzo Fernández went to Benfica for 18 million euros, but before all that, the one who was really close to taking to Europe was FC Barcelona. The Blaugrana club even planned his signing with Mateu Alemany and Ramón Planes, who signed Pedri. Enzo Fernández was seen as the natural replacement for Sergio Busquets but it could not be.
Fernández returned to River Plate after a successful loan to Defensa and Justicia and was dazzling in Argentina. He had renewed his contract, adding an release clause of 20 million euros, although it was negotiable and his departure could be agreed for just over 10 million euros plus variables. However, Barcelona was left in nothing.
According to Spanish newspaper Sport, FC Barcelona could have taken Fernández for that figure but something happened in the middle: "The operation ended in nothing after the dismissal of Koeman and the departure of Ramon Planes from the club with the arrival of Xavi Hernández and the creation of a new sports structure. Enzo continued to grow and, finally, Benfica, a club specializing in signing cheap to sell later very expensive".
A few weeks ago, Enzo Fernández was linked to Liverpool, who were willing to pay 100 million euros for the Argentine. The fun thing is that River Plate would love to see such a sale go through. The midfielder arrived at Benfica for a total package of 18 million euros: 12 million at the time and the rest in variables. But the point is that the Argentine giants managed to keep 25 percent of a future sale and considering these figures, the Argentine club would receive a fortune.
