Cannavaro ready for managing in Italy and this club wants him
The captain of the 2006 World Cup winners is taking over a side in his home nation
Fabio Cannavaro will be managing in Italy very soon. The captain of the World Cup-winning Italian side of 2006 has been in the managerial game since taking over Guangzhou FC for the first time in 2014; now, after a year of rest, he's ready to return to the job, and he's eyeing a club in Serie B.
Aged 49, during a four-year stint with Guangzhou Cannavaro lifted both the Chinese Super League title and the Chinese Super Cup after his return to the club in 2017. He even managed the Chinese National Team from March 2019 to April of this year while continuing to perform his duties at club level.
Now, sources are linking him with a move back into Europe, to take over Serie B side Benevento. According to Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio, talks are advanced and an agreement has already taken place; meanwhile, fellow journalist Fabrizio Romano has added: "Fabio Cannavaro, ready for a new chapter as manager. Talks are now progressing well with Italian second division side Benevento - deal set to be agreed".
After a playing career that took him from Napoli to Juventus and Real Madrid, via Parma and Inter Milan, this would be Fabio Cannavaro's first management job in Europe. For their part, Benevento are struggling in the lower half of mid table, currently 13th in Serie B. The finished 7th last season, but were playing on Serie A as recently as 2020-21, when they finished 18th, just four points away from salvation.
