UNBELIEVABLE: Chelsea DISCARDED this incredible player
A football transfers agent claimed that the German international was keen on staying at the London club
If one thing dominated the news around Chelsea during the last transfer window, was their crazy search for centreback cover following the departures of Andreas Christensen and particularly Antonio Rudiger, to FC Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively. The Blues ended up paying upwards of £70 million for Leicester City's Wesley Fofana after missing out on Jules Kounde and Matthjis de Ligt, but now it comes to the light that it could all have been avoided.
That's because according to Saif Rubie, a well know transfers intermediary for a number of players and clubs, Antonio Rudiger was in fact discarded by the Roman Abramovich adminstration before the sale of the West London club by Todd Boehly was completed.
It was previously thought that the German international had left Chelsea after asking for a substantial increase in his wages in order to renew his contract with the Stamford Bridge club. However, Rubie revealed in an interview with UK radio talkSPORT that this was not the case.
"What if I told you Chelsea, and the old regime, basically made next to no effort to keep [Rudiger]?", claimed Rubie, "At the time [Rudiger] was very happy to stay and potentially be the captain of the club. He was offered a contract that was half the amount Romelu Lukaku were earning". This would make Chelsea's desperate attempts to find a replacement like an absolute waste if only things were handled more intelligently.
Saif Rubie even went on to confirm that the offer presented to Antonio Rudiger by Real Madrid was one of the less economically enticing, with other clubs offering far greater amounts: "Let me confirm this, live on air, the Real Madrid deal was the smallest deal on offer", he claimed, "There was a club in England offering almost double the amount and a club in Europe doubling the amount". It just goes to show how wasteful the industry of football can be sometimes.
