The INCREDIBLE story linking Pierre Aubameyang with Wesley Fofana
The two are the latest Chelsea stars, but they also have something else in common
The signing of Wesley Fofana was one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer for Chelsea. Needing help at centreback and having missed on two big targets, the Blues went all in for the 21 year old Frenchman, who ended up costing them a initial £72 million. While Fofana never hid how keen he was on the move, perhaps Chelsea would've had an even bigger incentive had they completed another of their transfers a bit quicker: that of Pierre Emerick Aubameyang.
That's because, perhaps unknowingly to the Stamford Bridge side, the two have a common link. Still only 33 years old, Aubameyang has had an incredible career, playing for a great deal of the biggest sides in the world, like AS Monaco, AC Milan, and Borussia Dortmund among others, but the club where he first was able to showcase all his talent was none other than AS Saint Etienne.
Known as Les Verts for their iconic green shirt, Saint Etienne are a historic club in French football, and despite their relegation to Ligue 2 last season, no one can take away their 10 league titles and 6 French cups from their cabinets.
The Gabon international played for Saint Etienne between 2011 and 2013, scoring 41 goals and providing 25 assists in 97 games, before sealing his move to Borussia Dortmund. It was there that he met a very young Wesley Fofana, who was then part of the famous Les Verts academy.
Idolising the striker, the now-world class defender Wesley Fofana asked Pierre Emerick Aubameyang for a photo, which was shared by the Saint Etienne social media channels, probably as a reminder to their current academy players that if they work hard, listen to their coaches and have that one bit of luck they could also some day be teammates with their heroes.
