Tuchel on Chelsea's RECORD summer: "We needed to INSPIRE the team":
The Chelsea boss spoke about the Blues' spending this transfer market, and gave his take
Chelsea was one of the stories late in the transfer market, with the way in which they seemed to spend with reckless abandon to get themselves out of the hole they're in early in the season. Now, Blues manager Thomas Tuchel has claimed that his team needed these moves to get "inspired".
"The players we got are very good players and very good personalities. Everything was needed to inspire the group. We made excellent signings", said the German manager, who was quick to address the spending issue, "It does not help when we talk about the price too much. This is how the market was for us, maybe we weren't in the perfect position to find the right price."
The former PSG manager was also quick to praise new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, who took a leading role in the negotiations for every signing this summer, particularly for top priority target Wesley Fofana: "Todd was relentless on it and we never gave up. We managed to fulfill this transfer", Tuchel said, "Wesley is young, fast and very strong in set-pieces, defending and attacking."
However, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, one of the Blues' most significant new additions, won't be ready right away owing to injuries: "At the moment he cannot train", Tuchel told the press ahead of Chelsea's next game, against West Ham. "We first have to make sure he gets a mask to protect his jaw and then we can start to try with the mask from next week".
Still, the Chelsea boss doesn't worry about it. "Auba is always happy to fight for something and accept the challenge", added Thomas Tuchel, "The more challenges he has, the better it is. If he wants to overcome the number nine curse, or he wants to prove someone wrong in London - the more, the better".
