Timo Werner was surely glad to get out of Chelsea FC. The German joined the Stamford Bridge side for £47.5 million in what was hailed as a great move for him and the club back in 2020. However, he could only score 23 goals in 89 outings, which were generally looked upon as a disappointing performances. He scored four goals during the Blues' 2021 Champions League-winning season, but overall his lack of consistency in West London led to a £25 million return to the Bundesliga.

Now, out of the club, Werner can speak more clearly about what he thinks went on at Stamford Bridge, and he has little doubts about it. "I think the coach's system of play didn't suit me perfectly. That's why it was clear to me that I wanted to take a new step. I'm at an age where I want to play as much as I can", explained Werner in an interview with German podcast Einfach Luppen.

"For me, the fun of playing football is in the foreground. Of course, I had great success at Chelsea, but the fun got a bit lost in the end because I didn't play regularly anymore", added the former Stuttgart striker, who slowly slid down the pecking order as his performances led to mounting disappointment withing the Chelsea structure.

However, Werner still looks back positively at his time in the Premier League, despite not living up to the hype in West London: "I really associate very great successes with Chelsea - the greatest of my career. It will always be a special club for me. I will also stay in touch with many of the players from the team".

It's 0 from 2 for strikers under Thomas Tuchel, however, who also faced criticism from Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian departed for Inter Milan earlier this window. It's a position now Chelsea are looking to reinforce, with Barcelona's Pierre Emerick Aubameyang the most likely target.
