Historic: Chiellini leaves Juventus for the MLS after 17 years
Journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Giorgio Chiellini will leave Juventus at the end of the season and has been approached by MLS clubs
Bombshell in Serie A in Italy: after 17 years defending Juventus and more than 20 years of career, defender Giorgio Chiellini will say goodbye to the European elite to embark on a new adventure on another continent: the centreback is joining the MLS. The experienced defender believes it is time to change course after failing to qualify Italy for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Although it is not known which club he will play for, the news that he will leave Juventus is already confirmed by journalist Fabrizio Romano. "Giorgio Chiellini will leave Juventus at the end of the season and he has been approached by MLS clubs since April: two offers have already been received, including one from Los Angeles FC. Chiellini has not yet made any decision, while Juventus will sign 100% a new center back this summer".

Chiellini arrived at Juventus in 2005 after a single season at Fiorentina, his first in Serie A, in 2004-05 and missed out on a spot for the Italy squad that won the 2006 World Cup in Germany. However, he did suffer, like the rest of his teammates at Juventus, relegation after a betting scandal. Following Buffon's departure a year ago, Chiellini became Juve's longest-serving player.
He extended his stay with the Bianconeri after Allegri expressly requested that he be renewed for one more season, in July 2021. Now, however, he's callin it a day and will say his goodbyes, taking the pride of at the very least having seen the club classified for the Champions League next season and with a title won with Italy, the Euro 2020 that was played in 2021. It is not known what he will do after retiring, but a last statement gives clues: "Italian football needs to rejuvenate, the mentality is too conservative. Stadiums, events for the whole family , championship format: you have to be open to change or everything will end" he declared in protest at the stagnation of football in his country.
Chiellini proposes changing the dispute format of the championship, although he admits that this may not prosper: "I think about the format of the championships, they should be reviewed. The 'play-offs' would give unpredictability and suspense, they would be an extraordinary event capable of involving millions of people. But the news is scary and nothing ever changes." Will he become a director to try to materialize these reforms? Only time will tell.
