"He was ANGRY with me": The player who got Darwin Nuñez sent off speaks
The Uruguayan had a torrid debut Premier League start, and it was all thanks to this man
Liverpool paid £67 million for Darwin Nuñez's abilities, and heading is certanly one of them, but nothing like he showed during his last match. After just 57 minutes, the Uruguayan striker received a red card for headbutting an opponent in front of the referee.
Darwin Nuñez was sent off in his first Premier League start
That opponent was Crystal Palace's Joachim Andersen, a 26 year old Danish defender who joined the Eagles from Lyon last season, and he recently spoke about the incident with Nuñez, which led the Uruguayan to see his first red card in just two Premier League games.
The Dane was open up to admit his part in the confrontation. For the majority of the game, Andersen had been tightly marking Nunez and not allowing him any breathing room. The Crystal Palace defender was getting on Nuñez's nerves, as seen by video of the two squabbling at several moments during the game. Nuñez eventually lost his cool.
"The whole game I sat really close to him, I annoyed him a lot and did well against him. I think that's why he was angry with me," Andersen admitted, "He headbutted me, the first one, at a cross, and I told him he shouldn't do that. I was angry with him. Then he did it again which is, for me, is really stupid, so it's a clear red card".
For their part, Nuñez' teammates were somewhat understanding of his reaction, while also pointing out the young centreforward is probably the one who's angriest at his reaction. "Obviously he was disappointed and also probably with himself", commented Liverpool third captain Virgil Van Dijk, "But it's a learning curve and obviously we will always back him. He's got the backing from us and he knows it should not happen again and hopefully it will be that way".
The moment Darwin Nuñez lost his temper
Luckily for Darwin Nuñez, it wasn't all lost for his team. Luis Diaz's incredible long-range goal allowed Liverpool to eventually gain a point, but manager Jurgen Klopp will now be regretting Nuñez's absence because he is expected to be punished. "Darwin knows [he let his teammates down]," said Klopp to UK network Sky Sports,"I will talk to him. It was not a reaction we want to see".
