Manchester United: De Jong would prefer Champions League football
Negotiations between the Dutch star and his former manager's new team have started, but still a few stumbling blocks along the way
Soon-to-be-Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has already set his sights on his first transfers, as the Red Devils push to sign Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
De Jong, who was part of ten Hag's great Ajax team of 2018/19, hasn't enjoyed the best of times lately at Barcelona, still unable to take Sergio Busquets role as the team's central midfielder. The Dutch manager would be keen to reunite with his former star at his new club. However, things might not be so easy.
As reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano, there has been contact between Manchester United and De Jong, but there's no agreement yet.
On the other hand, English newspaper The Telegraph is reporting that "if it becomes clear [De Jong] has no future at the Nou Camp, sources have indicated that he would prefer to join a club that can offer Champions League football". That would be a serious stumbling block for United, who will be playing the UEFA Europa League next season.
It seems there is still quite some road to go until we can confirm whether De Jong will become a Red Devil.
