Bad luck for CR7 and Portugal: They'll miss this star at the World Cup
With Qatar 2022 just a month away, this Portguese star will be out of the team
It's a huge blow for Portugal's chances at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Diogo Jota will be out of the due to a muscle injury that would give him more than a month of recovery. The player and Jurgen Klopp confirmed as much following the clash between Jota's Liverpool and Manchester City.
Jota was taken off on a stretcher in stoppage time during Liverpool's 1-0 Premier League win over Manchester City. After performing an MRI, it was confirmed that the recovery time will take more than a month, so he will not be taken into account by Portugal head coach Fernando Santos for the World Cup.
"[He has a] a big impact [on the team]. He will not be in for a long time", Klopp explained after the match. "We're talking about months. I don't want to put a number on it because I hope in the rehab there is a positive development but it will be long". It's another headache for the Liverpool boss, who just recently lost Luis Díaz to injury as well.
Klopp commended his player for the attitude with which he's facing the situation: "It's Diogo and he is surprisingly ok so far. He is an incredibly smart boy and I think he knew it when they carried him off the pitch. When I came out we passed each other after the game and he explained what happened. In that moment he knew it was a serious one that could be pretty impactful for his World Cup dreams".
For his own part, Diogo Jota confirmed the worst news with a message on his twitter: "After such a good night at Anfield mine ended in the worst way! In the last minute one of my dreams collapsed. I will be one more supporting from the outside, club and country, and fighting to be back as soon as possible. You'll Never Walk Alone".
