INCREDIBLE: The dog that saved the 1966 World Cup
In 1966, the World Cup was stolen but luckily, a dog found it!
The 1966 World Cup is a very well-remembered World Cup for different reasons. For example, he had one of the most exciting finals in history. In that game, England beat West Germany 4-2 in extra time and won its first and, so far, the only title in its history. Thanks to this, team captain Bobby Moore managed to lift the Jules Rimet Trophy. At that time, the world cup trophy had a different design, which lasted until 1974 when it was changed to the version we all know.
But the English would never have been able to win that trophy, were it not for an unexpected hero... a dog! It all started on March 20, during the World Cup Trophy Tour, which at the time was on display at Westminister Central Hall in London. It is not known how but, in an oversight of the security guards, the trophy disappeared!
The World Cup trophy had been stolen! The news caused a stir and above all, a lot of discomfort in FIFA. The English federation even made a replica in case the trophy did not appear. Later, the thieves telephoned, demanding 15,000 pounds in exchange for the stolen object.
Fortunately, everything changed just one week later. David Corbett was walking the streets of South Norwood with his dog Pickles. When suddenly, the dog approached a tree and found something buried. It was an object wrapped in paper, which turned out to be... the World Cup trophy!
Automatically, Corbett took the trophy to the police, who informed the English football authorities. As a prize, he received 6,000 pounds, while the hero Pickles was invited to a celebratory banquet and allowed to lick the dishes.
The thieves were never caught.
