"He needs to be strong mentally": He's backing Maguire despite his blunders
The England centreback has been the target of many criticism and mockery, but this legend is still backingh him
Rio Ferdinand has urged Harry Maguire to remain strong after his last performance with the England National Team. The former Manchester United centreback defended his countryman, who has become the single biggest target in English football due to some of his blunders and bad performances.
Maguire has had a terrible start to the year after being benched by Erik ten Hag despite being the club captain for Manchester United. While Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate still backs him, blunders like the one on his last outing for England can't help his chances.
"I feel for Harry, every mistake is being punished and scrutinised", wrote Ferdinand in his social media channels afterwards. "It comes with the territory though. He needs to be strong mentally to get through this! Playing with no games at this level always leaves you open".
Luckily for Maguire, his boss for the England team seemed equally keen on moving on from the match: "Tonight, in the end, a couple of errors have cost us the goals but I'll focus on the fact they played with tremendous spirit and showed a belief that we haven't shown in the last few games. I thought the crowd saw that and rose to that".
Harry Maguire has been under close scrutiny for a while now as a result of his errors and has become a meme in some social media sites. With the World Cup around the corner, he'll need the support of the likes of Ferdinand to keep his chances.
