"Not a game changer": Carragher's take on Haaland' in the Premier League
The former Liverpool defender spoke about where Erling Haaland will fit in the Premier League for Manchester City
Can Erling Haaland make an immediate big impact at Manchester City and in the Premier League? That is what many in English football are wondering. One who has answers to this question is former Liverpool FC player and legend turned pundit Jamie Carragher.
"I still think City are favourites, but I don't think Haaland is a game changer for them in terms of winning the league. They win the league now and they already get 95 to 100 points - are they going to get 110?! There are only so many points you can win in a season" explained Carragher on UK radio talkSPORT.
However, the former Liverpool centreback believes that the Norwegian's presence would have been decisive in Manchester City's clash with Real Madrid in the semifinals of the last Champions League: "I think Haaland is almost the icing on the cake for the Champions League. If he's playing away in Madrid, they don't lose that game. I think that's the difference he'll make", Carragher added.
For his part, Pep Guardiola wants to take it slowly. "He scored a goal which is important, these type of goals in front of keeper - always he's there. The first minutes, he needs more rhythm and time but already he had 45 minutes which is good for him. We'll see how he reacts to the niggles that he had in the previous weeks. After we come back we have long weeks to prepare every weekend game. In those two or three weeks we will get the best form", explained the Spanish coach after their friendly against Bayern Munich.
Erling Haaland wants to show that he is up to the task and that he will not suffer the pressure: "It's a big challenge, a new country, a new league, new coach. I know how it is to come to a new club, I've done it a couple of times before. I'm looking forward to it. I smile a lot, work a lot, and hopefully enjoy the game a lot". For now, he's already scored his first goal with the Sky Blues.
