Historic opportunity: The ball from the 1974 World Cup final goes up for sale
It was a gift by professional Uruguayan referee to a club from that country and it will be auctioned in Europe
Football memorabilia seems to be on the rise lately. Earlier this month, the kit Maradona wore in the 1986 World Cup quarter finals against England was auctioned for over £7 million. Now, the one of the footballs with which the 1974 World Cup final was played will be sold.
The current owners of the ball are rather curious, as it apparently was on the hands of a second division team from Uruguay, called Rampla Juniors. The club was gifted the piece of memorabilia by professional Uruguayan referee Ramón Barreto, who was one of the linesmen on that historic match.
It will be a rare opportunity for any avid collector to get their hands on one of the footballs that were kicked around by the likes of Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Neeskens and Gerd Müller.
The ball in question is an Adidas Telstar Durlast, hand-sewn and 100% polyurethane-coated leather, a flexible synthetic material that does not change shape or size in the cold, and gives resistance to water. It will be auctioned in Europe with the objetive of raising funds for the club.
