Barcelona push De Jong as his agent claims EXTORTION from the club

The Dutchman is against the wall and will have to decide what he cares about more, colours or money

We're entering the hundredth chapter of the Frenkie de Jong versus Barcelona saga. With Manchester United still watching in the distance, waiting for any chance of heart from the Dutchman, the central topic now is De Jong's wages. The Catalan club are implementing a strict wages structure to fix their economic woes and prevent the situation from ever happening again, but the former Ajax star wants nothing to do with it.

Ali Dursun, De Jong's agent, has fiercely refused to have the player take any pay cut and even believes that his client is the victim of extortion. His contract, currently worth 12 million euros per season, would be cut almost in half, reducing to 7 millions, plus another potential 2 million in performance-related clauses.

This puts De Jong against the wall. He has made it abundantly clear that he wants to remain in the city, as has done his girlfriend, model Mikky Kiemeney, with whom he's recently got engaged. The club also wants him to stay, with Xavi making it clear he's got a place in his plans for the future, and who considers him a player with a lot of room to grow.

However, all of that comes after the wage negotiation, with Barcelona making it clear that he's got to take the salary reduction or the move away, with no middle ground. In that sense, it's still very much Manchester United that lead the race, with Chelsea and Bayern Munich far behind. However, the Bavarian giants come with a great advantage, as it became known recently that, unlike a move to England, De Jong could see himself playing for the Bundesliga champions; the option of a loan away is now among the alternatives for the player and the club.

All this comes in the context of the recent words by La Liga president Javier Tebas, who warned the league would take measures if they thought Barcelona was acting in infringement of the arrangement the league has with the players' union. "The players cannot be split from the team or pressured, it is what the collective agreement, the Law, reason and ethics mark", commented Tebas. For Frenkie de Jong, it may soon be time to decide whether he cares more about the money or his "dream" club's colours.
