GET OUT: Barcelona SHOCKS Frenkie de Jong with exit orders
The Dutchman was supposedly not for sale, but now the agreement is done, the message from the Catalan giants has changed
"Never meet your heroes or you'll be disappointed", the say and in the case of Frenkie de Jong and FC Barcelona, it could very well be "never play for your dream club or you'll be told to leave". Despite club president Joan Laporta often saying the Dutchman was not up for sale, now reports indicate he very well may be.
That's because according to The Athletic's Pol Ballus, that's exactly what the Catalan giants have communicated to the Dutch midfielder. Barcelona and Manchester United reached an agreement over the transfer fee for De Jong recently, and the higher ups at the club feel that the bid is too good to pass on.
As reported, the transfer fee would be for 75 million euros, with add-ons worth another 10 million. With Barcelona in dire straits financially, looking to cut expenses and turn profits where they can, it very well could be that they can't look the other way as a very promising but often disappointing De Jong could be moved on, which would also save them the reported 16 million euros per season that the Dutchman earns.
At the moment, Barcelona's options for the former Ajax player are either taking the move to United or taking a wage cut, while the player and his agents have remained adamant he won't do. This is further complicated as De Jong is owed a 17 million euros in deferred salary payment from the Catalan club, which is slowing down the move.
With Barcelona keen to register new signings like Raphinha, the choice for Frenkie de Jong is clear and his decision will have come soon, as the squad is set to board their planes soon to take on their pre season tour in the United States.
