Barça and United reach TOTAL AGREEMENT over De Jong but he's still doubtful
The clubs have been negotiating for a long time, and the agreement is now done, but no answer from the player
The transfer saga of Frenkie de Jong and Manchester United could be at an end very soon. The Red Devils have been chasing the Dutch midfielder since hiring his former coach Erik ten Hag but progress has been slow and even now we can't predict how things are going to work. That being said, there's light at the end of the tunnel.
As reported by various journalists, Manchester United and Barcelona have reached a complete agreement on the transfer fee and package that would take the former Ajax man to Old Trafford. As per The Athletic's David Ornstein, it will be 75 million euros plus another 10 million in add-ons fees.
Now, however, comes the tricky part for Manchester United, as they have to convince a very doubtful De Jong to join them. From the very start, the Dutch midfielder has been hesitant about moving, at one point claiming "I prefer to stay at Barcelona. That has always been my dream club and it still is". It is also understood that De Jong is owed a 17 million euros deferred compensation from Barcelona, which is slowing down the move.
However, it could be a case of the Dutch midfielder wanting to have his cake and eat it too. As per Fabrizio Romano, De Jong's agents would have informed Barcelona that the player has no intention to leave, but also will not be accepting any salary reduction. This puts him in a tricky situation, as said lowered wages were one of the condition's for him staying at the Camp Nou.
With that, it lands on Manchester United to make a tempting offer to Frenkie de Jong, who joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 for 86 million euros, and has since played almost 100 LaLiga matches win the Blaugrana outfit.
