HISTORIC: Marcelo Gallardo to leave River Plate
The Argentine coach, who was linked with the Barcelona job at one time, is set to part ways with the legendary club after a very succesful stint
Marcelo Gallardo surprised the world of Argetine football by announcing at a press conference and that he will leave River Plate after eight years. After beating Platense 2-1 during their last match, the Argentine coach called a press conference and made his decision official: "This is the most difficult thing for me to say: I am not going to continue in River after my contract".
An emotional Gallardo appeared with the club president Jorge Brito, and the sports director, Enzo Francescoli at a press conference and with a cracking voice explained: "Apart from the sadness, I have a deeply felt internal peace that makes me being good with myself. The path traveled at River only makes me feel proud. We have experienced many beautiful things in all these years that we have dedicated to the club. The path has been extraordinary".

Along the same lines, Gallardo continued: " I want to thank the fans, thank them from the bottom of my heart for the demonstration of affection. It's been 8 and a half years. I have to thank the opportunity and the total freedom that they have given me in my work. I thank everyone, players, managers, fans and all the people who have accompanied me".
The most successful coach in the history of the Millonarios, Marcelo Gallardo took office in 2014 and won 14 titles, including two Copa Libertadores, one of them against Boca Juniors in an iconic 2018 final. For Argentine football it is the end of an era.
