"I want to do that": Haaland knows who he wants to imitate
The Norwegian gave an interview and he opened about his objetives and his firsts moments with Manchester City
Erling Haaland started his adventure at Manchester City and in the Premier League on the right foot. They signed him to score goals and so far he has 14 strikes in 10 games, which makes him the top scorer currently in the league This probably why some of the early pressure has gone away; slightly more relaxed, Haaland gave an interview to UK football magazine FourFourTwo and revealed which player he looks to imitate.
"I don't know what will happen, but it must always be about learning, about developing", Haaland said. "You can never stop looking for new ways to become better. Look at Karim Benzema at Real Madrid. He's 34 now, and suddenly he's developed into an even better player over the last couple of years - that's insanely good. I want to always do that", said Haaland of the French attacker, who's favoured to win the Ballon d'Or.
Haaland also explained that he's not oblivious to the declining influence of strikers, but that motivates him more: "I was watching the Premier League a lot before I arrived here, and I think over the past few years the big No.9 has become more and more rare, but that's why it's even better to be one now! It's the final position and I always wanted to be a striker because of that. I love my position". Despite his young age, 22 years old, Haaland is already among the ten active players with the most hat tricks today, with 12.
In the same interview Haaland dropped the main reason for joining Manchester City, and it's no surprise: Guardiola. "Pep didn't have to sell me anything. start, he's a special coach and that was very important to me. We all know what he has done for his teams, but also for his players and for football in general. This is something I want to be a part of. I think we will have a good time together. The facilities, the staff, the people around the club, it is a great organization. It is a very professional club, it does everything in a good way to help the players, which I like a lot".
What does Guardiola have to say about his star striker? Well, he supports him, as expected. "We are delighted with him. There are some details that are still missing, but not only with him, but with everyone. It is a matter of time. It is what happens with the new players, to reach the connections and the chemistry on the field to the right moments and hit the right rhythm".
However, Erling Haaland receives praise not only from his team, but from legends of their derby rival, Manchester United. It was no one other than Wayne Rooney who praised the Norwegian after his debut against Liverpool in the Community Shield: "Critics of [Erling] Haaland's debut last week must have been watching a different game to me - I saw a striker who is going to dominate this league and fire Manchester City to many more titles".
