Shocking! The day Roy Keane RUINED the career of Erling Haaland's father
Roy Keane kicked Haaland's father terribly, who never recovered
Everyone knows Erling Braut Haaland, the footballer who scored 9 goals in one game (U20 World Cup) and who scored an impressive 86 goals in 89 games for Borussia Dortmund. He is one of today's best scorers and possibly a future Ballon d'Or winner. However, not everyone knows the story of his father, who was also a football player.
Alf-Inge Håland was born in Norway in 1972. He trained at Bryne FK, where he made his debut at the age of 18. Three years later, shortly after the departure of historic manager Brian Clough (winner of 2 Champions League), he signed for Nottingham Forest. Unlike his son, Alf-Inge wanted to avoid goals, not convert them, so he played as a defender. In 1997, Nottingham Forest was relegated to the second division and for this reason, the defender signed a new contract with a new team, Leeds United.
On September 27, 1997, Leeds United faced the mighty Manchester United. The Red Devils were leading the match 1-0 when an injury occurred. In a very unfortunate and inadvertent move, Alf-Inge injured United player Roy Keane. The Norwegian player was very angry as he thought he was faking it to kill time, so he approached the player on the floor and told him to get up. But really, Roy Keane was really hurt. In fact, he tore his knee ligaments and because of that, he missed the rest of the season and part of the following season.
Finally, Roy recovered and returned to the courts normally. Years passed and both Alf-Inge and Roy faced each other in other matches. Everything seemed forgotten but it was not. On April 21, 2001, when Alf-Inge was already a Manchester City player, he was seriously injured in the knee by Keane. Unlike the previous injury, Roy Keane was seeking revenge on him and therefore injured him on purpose.
It was a very savage kick, a behavior that by no means would be tolerable. After receiving the red card, Roy Keane approached Alf-Inge and taunted him. "I had waited a long time, long enough. I hit him hard and thought, 'Take this, you bastard. And don't ever look at me mocking fake injuries again.' Even in the locker room afterward, I had no regrets. My attitude was 'f** with him.' What goes around comes around. He hit me with one and my attitude is an eye for an eye. He got his just reward", Roy Keane said. He received just three suspension dates and a £5,000 fine. Alf-Inge always lamented after learning that it was all "revenge".
Håland played two more games (one with the Norwegian national team and one with Manchester City). At the end of the season, he had surgery on his knee, but since he could not recover he had to stop playing professionally at 31 years of age.
It's also important to note, however, that the knee that caused Alf-Inge to retire was not the one that Roy Keane hit. The right leg took the hit, but it was the left leg that prevented Haaland from being able to play again. Therefore, the trial did not prosper. Despite that, the Norwegian continues to believe that everything was Roy Keane's fault. "I had been injury-free for eight years and that was my last full game. Too much of a coincidence, right?". Currently, he is still a fan of the "Citizens" and wants his son to make history with Manchester City.
