Netflix docuseries star back to England after failed stint in Ligue 1
He was one of England's most promising forwards but his move was shown on Netflix and now he returns to the Championship
Josh Maja burst into everyone's mind when he was heavily involved in season two of football docuseries "Sunderland 'Til I Die". The young English star was one of the best players in that season's squad, but drama insued when he refused to renew his contract with the Black Cats and was instead sold for £1.35 million to Ligue 1 side Girondins Bordeaux, something captured in eerie detail by the documentary's cameras.

The youngster famously feigned ignorance of the rumours that clubs were after him during one of the episodes of the docuseries, which led many to criticise him for it. "Transfer speculation about me? That's interesting. [The new contract] hasn't been sorted yet, but I think it's getting sorted basically. I just let my agent deal with that stuff, my head is just focused on football", said the then 21 year old, although he has since complained if it being an unfair depiction of his case.
Regardless, things haven't worked out for the now 23 year old Maja, who has only managed 13 goals and 6 assists in 58 games with the French side, and has since twice been on loan back in England, first with Fulham and then with Stoke City.
Now, Maja is set to put an end to his European adventure. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano Birmingham City are set to complete a deal for the Englishman, after an official bid has been submited to Bordeaux. Maja is expected to fly to England soon to complete medical tests and then sign a five year deal with the St Andrew's side.

This way, Josh Maja is set to face his former team this season, after leaving the club in very dramatic and very public fashion in 2019. As is expected, many have pointed out how far off track his career has gone since leaving Sunderland, and where he may have been today if he hadn't left for France.
