Koundé: The star who dumped Chelsea as the Blues are in need of defenders
The Frenchman preferred Barcelona over Chelsea
Jules Koundé was arguably one of the most sought after centrebacks in the last transfer market. Chelsea fought for his signing and was just hours away from making it happen, but a call from Barcelona changed everything.
The Frenchman changed his opinion as soon as he heard Xavi Hernandez's voice on the phone, asking if he would like to Join Barca. There was no doubt un Kounde's decision and dumped the Blues immediately.
The Catalan club paid Sevilla 55M euros for the 23-year-old. Tuchel told the media during the pre-season in Orlando that he was "a little bit annoyed" by Barca's moves around Koundé and pursuing Azpilicueta to move to Spain.
In Stamford Bridge, they don't need to lose another center-back, as Antonio Rudiger and Andras Christensen both left the club and joined Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively. They are in need of defenders, as Koulibaly`s transfer is not enough to cover what they lost.
Also, missing the signing of Koundé means the German manager loses a top-flight defender who would fit perfectly in Chelsea's three CB`s defensive tactics, as he got the speed, ball control, headers, and passing technique Tuchel wants.
With these qualities, Jules Koundé managed to score two goals and give three assists in the last LaLiga season for Sevilla, where he was a starter in 32 out of the 38 games his team played.
