Manchester City 2022-23: Champions League glory awaits
Citizens hope this season to be the one they reach European glory
Manchester City is well known for investing vast amounts of money in world stars and making outstanding teams, but, somehow, they can never end the season reaching their most important objective, and the only thing Etihad stadium doesn't have: The Champions League trophy.
Last year's European elimination against Real Madrid in a Semifinal series they dominated and were winning till the 90-minute catastrophe in which they conceded 3 goals in 5 minutes, and 2021 final loss against Chelsea marked a breaking point in City history.
Fans believe in Guardiola's project and like possession playing, offensive game, and wing-backs who finish on the rival area. But there is a problem: they also need trophies and Premier League it's just not enough for them, supporters want the Champions League.
In order to reach this, Pep made refreshed the team. He left Fernandinho on a free transfer to Athletico Paranaense, marking an end of an era of one of his captains, and sold Gabriel Jesus to Arsenal.
The Spanish manager also made three stunning signings to replace the Brazilians, investing a total of 128 million euros. The first one to arrive in Manchester was Erling Haaland, the former Borussia Dortmund player who scored 134 goals despite being just 21 years old. The Citizens paid 60M for him, and hope the Norwegian can bring his finishing, headers, and speed to Etihad.
Julián Alvarez was the second signing. He performed in an absolutely massive way being in River Plate, and just with just one more year of age than Haaland, he scored six goals in one match, and four goals in three other games, breaking unknown records for Argentinian football. The striker is well known for his ball control, definition, passes, and a natural quality that just makes it look easy for him.
Finally, Kalvin Phillips arrived for a 48M euros fee from Leeds United. Having 23 caps for England's national team, the whole country knows what he is capable of: Defending, Attacking, making assists, and bringing City's midfield a strong physique who runs for the 90 minutes.
With these signings, alongside current key players such as Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, and Rubén Días, Manchester City fans finally hope the 2022-23 season to be the one in which they finally pay their debt: Champions League.
