The deal NOBODY EXPECTED: Manchester City target Bundesliga star
The Citizens are planning a deal that no one saw coming for one of German football's biggest names
They may not seem like it, but Manchester City are always on the move in the transfer market. Although lately they seem to have been on the news more often regarding the potential move away of Bernardo Silva, the Citizens are constantly working to improve their team, and this time they pulled a move nobody saw coming.
That's because, according to The Athletic, the Sky Blues are close to sealing a deal with Borussia Dortmund for defender Manuel Akanji. While far from done, both parties are optimistic of reaching a full agreement, with a 17.5 million euros fee for the player.
Akanji is yet to make a single appearance for Borussia Dortmund this season, despite featuring in 36 games last season, as he has fallen down the Bundesliga club's pecking order with the transfers of Nico Schlotterbeck from Freiburg and Niklas Sule from Bayern Munich.
For their part, Manchester City already has four senior centrebacks on their roster. However, Aymeric Laporte has yet to play this year due to injury, while Nathan Aké is now also down injured, leaving only John Stones, and Ruben Dias fit for play.
"We thought about that (bringing in cover)", said Pep Guardiola recently, "But at the same time Nathan is coming back soon and then in late September/October, Aymer will be back, too. I am happy with that. But then maybe we wake up in the morning and think, ‘oh maybe we should have bought a central defender!'".
Manuel Akanji moved to Borussia Dortmund from Swiss side FC Basel in 2018 and has since been a regular for the first squad, making over 150 appearances for the German club since then.
