"Just 111 points to play!": Guardiola's IRONIC answer to title questions
The Spanish coach faced questions regarding his chase of the Premier League this season
The Premier League season has just started, but some people are already thinking about how it will. Pep Guardiola's Manchester City has claimed an early lead over usual rivals Liverpool, putting four points between themselves and the Reds, and they sit on top of the table on goal difference.
It's only been two matches, but some are already wondering who will be champions
It may sound crazy, but that gap has already push some to ask if that will be important to win the Citizens the league, as Guardiola found out in his latest press conference. Questioned on whether the four points could prove important come May with how close the league has been lately, the Spanish coach gave a funny answer: "Yeah, a lot, just 111 points to play!".
"You said it perfectly, it's very early days", explained Guardiola. "After two fixtures we cannot make any plans about the future. The future is [next match against] Newcastle United and we have respect for all the teams. We will try to improve our game".
The Spaniard insisted that for now the focus of the team is in getting better at their own game, taking advantage of the lesser concentration of fixtures, with the midweek games not coming until later in the season. "It is just two Premier League games. It is a process to get our game better, we are still in a process like pre-season", said Guardiola, "We have long weeks of training but when we start September this is not going to happen. We are trying to improve our principles, our game. The best way to see how the team is is during the games".
Guardiola is focused on improving his players at the moment
"The last two games we were really good, the players proved to me again how wrong I was because they did it really well", said the Spanish coach, clearly satisfied with the Sky Blues performances against West Ham and Bournemouth. Asked whether the struggles faced by Jurgen Klopp's side will help their chances, Pep Guardiola refused to give an answer: "It is not a question about Liverpool, it is Manchester City, I don't know Liverpool. You know the respect I have, it is what we have to do ourselves".
