Manchester United officialises HISTORIC signing as Antony is a Red Devil
The Old Trafford side have made official one of the signings of the season
It's finally official. The most expensive sale in the history of Ajax and it is the second most important purchase in the history of Manchester United has happened. Antony hasn't played a minute of football at Old Trafford yet but he's already left a mark that will be hard to match. The Brazilian striker arrives at Manchester United for £85 million and the English club has made it official.
Antony is a Red Devil
The Red Devils have been after the signature of the Brazilian since the beginning of the summer market, first bid £68 million and then £80 million; in the end, it took a record fee of £80 million to pry the Brazilian away from Amsterdam. "Manchester United have reached an agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Antony, subject to a medical examination, the player's terms being finalized and international clearance", read the official statement by the Red Devils.
With Ajax rejecting the first two offers, Antony came into conflict with the club. He refused to train, was absent in two games and later explained: "I'm not asking Ajax to release me, I'm asking Ajax to sell me with the highest bid ever for Eredivisie player. I've been insisting on this theme since February so that the club could rebuild the team with peace of mind".
The 22-year-old Brazilian winger scored 12 goals and provided 10 assists in 33 games across all competitions last season for Erik ten Hag's Ajax side. With that performance he reached the Brazilian National Team and the Dutch coach has insisted on his signing for Manchester United ad nauseam since arriving at Old Trafford.
This opens a question mark on what the future holds for Cristiano Ronaldo. Although nobody will admit it at Manchester United, Ten Hag and the Portuguese star are very much at odds since the former Real Madrid man asked to be allowed to leave this summer. With a price tag like that, it's clear that Antony will be a starter for Ten Hag and he's bound to take gametime away from Ronaldo, who has been a substitute in every game so far.
