"It wasn't nice": United target fires back at the way they went about his signing
The Red Devils were working overtime in the last few weeks to get the signings they needed, but they may have been too rushed
Cody Gakpo was one of the most heard of names in the last few days of the transfer window. The 23-year-old winger was linked with a number of clubs late on, particularly Manchester United, as a move away from PSV looked all but settled. However, things didn't work out, and now the Dutchman isn't very happy about it.
"At the beginning of the window United had reported ‘very calmly'. We were waiting for that. It was getting closer and the signals were getting more positive. Then you think: it might fall that way. But eventually that option faded a bit, actually only last week", explained Gakpo regarding the rollercoaster of rumours that linked him with a move to Old Trafford until the move for Antony was unlocked.
Southampton was also reportedly interested in the Dutchman, with the Saints reportedly reaching a £34 million deal with the PSV. Leeds United sporting director Victor Orta travelled to The Netherlands as well, but Gakpo reportedly refused to fly to England to complete the transfer to Elland Road.
"I'm glad it's over. For me it was the first window where it was stay or go", explained Gakpo, "In the last week it was looking at what was the right thing to do. I feel at home here, in my own city. Everyone knows how I feel here. But of course there are other things at play and I think you should have all the options. I did that too".
"In the end, PSV came up with a good offer that seemed to be the right choice", admitted Cody Gakpo, who will undoubtedly be glad the transfer market is over,"It was all last minute for me, because until last week I thought I was going to Manchester. Then it was choose another club and decide whether I wanted to go there. That is not nice for PSV and also not for me, because it felt rushed".
