"This is UNACCEPTABLE": Gloves are OFF in Ten Hag/Ronaldo clash
The Dutch coach has finally had enough after the Portuguese striker's repeated pushes for a move
The gloves are finally off. The time for niceties between Cristiano Ronaldo and Erik ten Hag is over. After repetedly telling the manager and the rest of the Manchester United heirarchy that he wants to move on, the Portuguese striker has moved into action rather than words, and the Dutch coach is fuming about it.
After missing the pre season tour on "personal issues", while his agent Jorge Mendes went around Europe offering him up to any takers, Ronaldo finally returned to England to train under ten Hag. However, their relationship isn't good, and the former Real Madrid man is still hellbent on departing United. After asking to play in the Red Devils' friendly against Rayo Vallecano, Ronaldo was subbed off at half time; then, he just left the stadium.
This has deeply angered Erik ten Hag, who until now had kept his version that the Portuguese was a very important part of his plans, and that he wouldn't want him to leave. "I don't certainly accept this. I think this is unacceptable. For everyone. We are a team and you have to stay until the end", said the Dutch manager, without naming the striker but clearly sending a message.
Manchester United's debut on the Premier League this season will be against Brighton and Hove Albion and Ten Hag's plan now seems to be that the Portuguese starts from the bench, at most. Ronaldo did not make preseason and at 38 years old and with no competitive rhythm he could end up being detrimental to the team.
For his part, Cristiano Ronaldo remains with his mind set on a move away from Manchester United. However, with most top clubs publicly distancing themselves from the move, and the striker refusing a return to his childhood club of Sporting Lisbon, the possibility of a move looks very difficult.
