UNEXPECTED: Manchester United fighting Premier League side for top target
The Red Devils thought they had him in the bag, but now it's looking like its going to be a close race for one of the best South American talents
South America is a perpetual talent factory, but no country in the continent will ever be so surprising in their continued excellence as Uruguay. With a total population of just 3.4 million people, they have no place in being a football superpower.
Despite that, the two-time World Cup winners remain one of the top player developers in the continent, and when those talents make the jump to the top European leagues they always make waves. The latest in this seemingly unending line of Uruguayan stars is Darwin Nuñez, and he could be playing in the Premier League very soon.
Reportedly one of the top targets for Manchester United, it has now come to light that there's another horse in the race for the young Benfica player's talents. According to Uruguayan journalist Sebas Giovanelli, its both Manchester United and Newcastle United who are closest to seal the deal.
The striker is currently under contract with Portuguese giants Benfica, and the club would allegedly want 80 million euros (68 million pounds) for their young star, which apparently has lowered the interest from other potential suitors, like Arsenal, PSG or Liverpool.
However, few clubs in the world have the buying power and prestige allure of Manchester United, while Newcastle United, even as a recently started footballing project, now have the means to offer Nuñez a better offer than anyone else, while also making him a marquee signing for their new era.
Both have been linked with a move for the Uruguayan for months, and with Nuñez finishing the season on 34 goals in 41 games for Benfica, he's bound to get a move this summer.
