Manchester United KNOW who they want to REPLACE David de Gea
The Red Devils are left with few options in goal, but they have the perfect target in sight
David de Gea has been Manchester United number one for over ten years now, having initially joined the Red Devils from Atlético Madrid for just under £19 million in 2011, one of the last great signings done by Sir Alex Ferguson. While the Spaniard looks like he has many years in the elite still, United have played with the idea of replacing him, especially after his level dropped in recent years.
However, now that Dean Henderson has gone to Notthinham Forest, there is no clear successor in line should Erik ten Hag feel that De Gea is (quite literally) dropping the ball. "Nobody followed through with anything they told me" explained a furious Henderson, who was promised the number one spot but then missed out after recovering from Covid. "I turned many loans down for that reason. It was frustrating. To sit there and waste 12 months is criminal at my age. I was fuming".
Fear not, yet, as the Red Devils have eyed a potential understudy to De Gea, and it comes from a very unlikely source. According to sports website The Athletic, Manchester United are preparing a £7million offer for Leeds United's Illan Meslier.
The young Whites goalie is undoubtedly one of the most interesting shotstoppers in the Premier League, as while he's prone to the ocassional blunder, he's also capable of some astonishing saves, and remains just 22 years old.
However, it would prove a controversial move. Despite not having direct rivals for the most part of 30 years, it's obvious that the Manchester United-Leeds United rivalry is still very much going on, as prove by Leeds academy graduate Kalvin Phillips refusing a move to the Red Devils on principle.
Regardless, it's looking like it will have to wait, as word from Jesse Marsch and the rest of Leeds United is that they have no intention of selling the Frenchman just yet. This would leave Tom Heaton the only real backup option to David de Gea, a move that could come back to haunt Manchester United.
