It's another blow for Erik ten Hag and his objectives at Manchester United. First, the transfer saga with Frenkie de Jong, where his former star wants nothing to do with playing for him again. Then, the drama surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo who can't wait to move away from United. And now, he's getting refused one of his targets for this window by the most incredible of reasons.
Erik ten Hag can't quite put together the team he wants
The Dutch manager wants to put together a team that can play his brand of football, and one of the things he needs the most is players who understand this idea from the get go. One such player could be Hakim Ziyech, who was part of that amazing Ajax team that reached the UEFA Champions League semifinals under Ten Hag in 2019.
The Moroccan international is at a standstill with current club Chelsea. According to reports, Ziyech is pushing for a transfer because he wants to play regular football. With only 23 Premier League appearances the previous season, the former Ajax star is not near Thomas Tuchel's key players. The desire to shift him is so bad that Blues have reportedly cut their asking price to £8 million, as noted by UK newspaper The Daily Mail.
This context looks like the perfect ocassion for Manchester United to swoop in and steal a interesting player from a direct rival, and do it on the cheap. However, much like with De Jong, Red Devils' manager Erik ten Hag has encountered an obstacle... his own club.
Ten Hag and Hakim Ziyech enjoyed a great relationship at Ajax
According to France Football journalist Nabil Djellit, there is no consensus about Hakim Ziyech within the ranks of Manchester United decision-makers. Many fear that he will suffer the same adaptation problems to the English game he has shown at Chelsea, which is why they're blocking the deal. This means it's another priority player for Erik ten Hag that he'll miss on, despite everything being there for the transfer to go through.
