INCHING CLOSER: United allegedly coming closer to deal for De Jong
Despite the Dutch midfielder saying he's happy at Barcelona, the move could prove imminent
If there's one club that's not familiar with having to fight for their signings, its Manchester United. The Old Trafford club has the financial might and the name to simply lure players their way. While this market has shown us that Giants can all so miss on big tranfers, the Red Devils aren't going to give up on their big objetive this European summer, Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutch midfielder has been high on the list for Manchester United since it became clear their next manager would be former Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag, and their chase for De Jong hasn't slowed down.
While Barcelona have put a big price (around 85 million euros or 72 million pounds) and De Jong has repeated made claims that he is happy at the Catalan club, United are relentless and that seems to have started bearing fruits.
The reason is simple. Barcelona need to make up funds to close down the signings that they want, as the club's economic position continues to be vulnerable, and so far De Jong has been the only player that has attracted massive interest out of the ones they could sell.
According to UK newspaper The Mirror, United think they're inching closer and closer to a deal with Barcelona, meaning everything would fall on De Jong to decide. The 25-year-old joined Barcelona in 2019 from youth club Ajax and has made 139 appearances for the Catalan club, scoring 13 goals and providing 17 assists.
