INCREDIBLE: He destroyed Maguire and then phoned to apologize
The England international was heavily criticised, but then one of his detractors called him to make amends
Pundits can get it wrong and that's exactly what Paul Merson must have said to Harry Maguire as he recently revelead he called the England international to apologize. The former Arsenal striker has been working for UK media Sky Sports for a long time now, and is known for his bombastic and controversial takes. However, he was recently had to eat his words as he admitted he called Maguire to ask for forgiveness.
Merson has stated that he apologised to Harry Maguire over the phone after calling Manchester United's intention to pay £80 million for him back in 2019 "ridiculous". When England advanced to the World Cup semifinals in 2018 thanks in large part to Maguire, United decided to pay Leicester City transfer record for a defender to bring him to Old Trafford the next season. Merson commented on the transfer on Sky Sports when asked what he thought of the move: "Harry Maguire, £80 million, is ridiculous. Ridiculous at the highest level".
It hasn't been the easiest of times for Maguire at Manchester United, since then having been dropped by Erik ten Hag in favour of Raphael Varane and new singing Lisando Martinez even though he remains the Red Devils' captain.
Still, Gareth Southgate has backed Maguire and selected him for his most recent England squad despite his limited playing time at the club level. With the 29-year-old poised to play a crucial part for his nation at the World Cup, and Merson has stated that he just wants the best for Maguire.
"I don't want to be right on that [his past criticism of Maguire] - I'd rather be wrong", Paul Merson recently told in an interview for UK newspaper The Telegraph. "I want England to win the World Cup and Harry Maguire to get the winning goal. It was just my opinion. I rang up Brendan Rodgers and said, 'Can you get me Harry Maguire's number?' I didn't feel comfortable with myself. I needed to ring him and say, 'I don't agree with the £80m but I shouldn't have said that and I'm sorry'. I went a little bit too far". With Qatar 2022 just around the corner, it will be as good a time as any for England to have one of their defensive bulwarks recover confidence in himself and his game.
