Leeds United to HONOUR Marcelo Bielsa with this SPECIAL tribute
The Argentine left a mark in the English club, and they're planning to pay hommage to him with this
The day Marcelo Bielsa retires it will be a sad day for football. The Argentine coach has a special way of connecting with players and fans at the teams he coaches and it's rare for a club that had him at their dugout to not hold a fond memory of those seasons. Now, his latest club are looking to take it one step further and give him a proper tribute.
Leeds United had been stuck in the lower reaches of English football for over 15 years when Marcelo Bielsa first took over. The Whites, at one time as big a team as Liverpool or Manchester United, had been struck by economic hardships and at one point they were even playing in the third division.
But then came the Andrea Radrizzani takeover, and with him, Marcelo Bielsa. The Argentine instantly revolutionised Leeds United, turning a mid table side into promotion contenders in the EFL Championship. Heartbreak came the first season when Leeds collapsed in the last fixtures and missed on promotion, but it was all made up for the following season, achieving automatic promotion and winning the title.
Bielsa did also manage to keep Leeds United in the Premier League during his first season, and while second-season syndrome hit the team hard and the Argentine left the club out of common accord with the Whites board, nobody at Elland Road has forgotten about his time in charge.
"We would like to name the training ground after his name", explained Leeds owner Radrizzani in a recent interview with The Athletic. "So Thorp Arch becomes the Marcelo Bielsa Training Ground", he indicated. It's worth pointing out that the Argentine has already been paid a similar hommage by his home club Newell's Old Boys, who play in the Marcelo Bielsa Stadium.
"I also have an idea that I shared with him, that one day I would love to build a university of football with his name (on it)", Radrizzani went further. "I hope he will still be open to that idea. My respect and my consideration will never change". Regardless of how things ended, it's clear that Marcelo Bielsa is still loved at Leeds United.
