Many footballers will tell you that winning the World Cup with your country is the pinnacle of their career. While that may certainly be truth, for very few players that has been so clear than it has for Mario Götze.
The goal that put Mario Gotze forever in the history of German football
The German midfielder, who came through the Borussia Dortmund youth teams, scored the winner in the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil, to refuse Lionel Messi's Argentina the title and lift Germany's fourth world title. However, not only was that the highest point of his career, but also the preamble of many of the lowest.
The following season, his form with Bayern Munich (who he had joined in 2013 from Dortmund) started to drop, which got him criticised by German legend Franz Beckenbauer. In 2016 he returned to Dortmund, but was dropped in early 2017 after being diagnosed with a mysterious illness which ended up being myopathy, a methabolism condition that can causes fatigue and weight gain.
Recovered, he showed flashes of brilliance, but not quite the same level that had made him one of the shining stars of German football, and would be released by Dortmund after the 2019-20 Bundesliga season.
With retirement looming over his head at just 28 years old, the joined Dutch side PSV Eindhoven. After a touch and go first stint, he exploded back into top form last season, finishing the Eredivisie campaing with 12 goals and 11 assists in 52 matches, his best tally since 2013-14, just before that World Cup.

Now, Mario Götze has secured a move back to Germany, with UEFA Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt triggering his 4 million euros release clause, and signing a deal for three years. He'll be playing the Champions League, so should he carry on his form he may just earn a spot on Germany's 26 players list for Qatar 2022.
