AT JUST 29: Europa League champion decides to end his career
He quotes lack of motivation and trouble with injuries as some of his main reasons
The last champions of the Europa League, Eintracht Frankfurt, surprisingly announced this Thursday the retirement of one of their captains, Martin Hinteregger. The Austrian defender decided to put an end to his career despite the recent title won with the club and the challenge they will have next season with the Champions League in sight.
Martin Hinteregger has decided to walk away from professional football
"In the fall I began to think about retiring at the end of the season. I was in a very difficult stage in sporting terms: my performance was irregular. I no longer enjoyed each victory so much and the defeats hurt me twice as much", Hinteregger said in a statement.
Hinteregger could not show his best performance during the last season due to injuries that later caused his lack of regular playing time. Despite this, he played 37 games, scored a goal and was part of one of the most important titles in the history of the team.
Notably, his close relationship with a far-right leader in Austria also gave him a negative reputation that put him at the center of criticism. This, combined with the decrease in his performance proved a determining combo for Hinteregger to decide to move away from professional football.
Martin Hinteregger therefore departs professional football with immediate effect.

Martin Hinteregger, who came through the RB Salzburg academy, has played for Borussia Monchengladbach and FC Augsburg as well as Eintracht Frankfurt. He played 134 matches for die Adler, scoring 14 goals and providing 6 assists between 2019 and 2022.
