"It was the heat of the moment": Galtier backs Mbappe after his comments
The French striker took to social media to complain about his role and the PSG manager commented on the matter
Kylian Mbappe is furious with Paris Saint Germain. The French forward has been playing as a number nine for the Parisian outfit despite apparently being assured that he would play in his favoured wide position when he turned down a move to Real Madrid last summer. While Christophe Galtier claims there are no problems with his star player, the rumours are doing the rounds.
After the defending French champions managed only a draw against Reims, the 23 year old took to social media to show his discontent, sharing a picture on his Instagram account, with the caption "#pitvotgang", pivot being the role he's been asked to play at the centre of PSG's attack.
Galtier, though, refrained from criticising Mbappe and acknowledged that the club had disappointed the Frenchman by failing to bring in the striker they had promised him in the summer. "It was a reaction in the heat of the moment, after a moment of disappointment", the French manager explained "I spoke a lot with Kylian at the start of the season and I was very attentive to his comments when he was playing for France, saying that he felt better in Les Bleus' attacking set-up".
"I don't know what was said to Kylian when he extended in May", added Galtier, in a move that could be seen to shift blame to others in the PSG hierarchy. "We have often discussed with the president and Luis Campos to get a fourth striker, with a different profile, who would allow for two strikers and for Kylian to play as much as possible in his preferred area".
"Kylian sometimes finds himself in the middle and he gets the impression that he's a pivot. But he's a smart player who's capable of adapting", pointed out the French manager, before defending his player, "He played while ill and tired, in a match which didn't turn out well for us. I'm trying to reassure him by finding different options. We're very mindful about his comments and his thinking because he's a very important player for the team".
Regardless, Kylian Mbappé's take on the matter is very clear, and Galtier would do well to listen. "The coach knows that there is a No.9 like Olivier [Giroud] who takes care of the defense and I can look for spaces, ask for balls. In Paris that doesn't happen, they ask me to play as a pivot, it's different", the French star said after his last game with Les Bleus. For now, it's nothing more than a grumble on the back, but it could very well be the case that the French star is starting to lament refusing that move to Real Madrid.
