Footballers are often condemned as being too vain, too self centered to care about what goes on in the rest of the world. While this has been disproved several times, it's always good to see another instance where the best players in the world use their position for good. This time it was Liverpool star Mohamed Salah's time to do it.

Over the weekend, a fire broke in at the Abu Sifin church in Giza, when approximately a thousand Coptic Christians were attending Sunday Mass, in a tragedy that took at least 41 lives. Officials think that an electrical malfunction in an air conditioner ignited the fire, which blocked an exit and led to a panic.

Now, the effort to rebuild the church has commenced, and according to Egyptian outlet OnTime Sports Salah has donated three million Egyptian pounds, or roughly £129,000 for the completing of the works.

The Liverpool forward has a history of supporting philanthropic organisations both in England and his native Egypt. Salah ranks as the seventh most charitable person in the UK according to the 2022 Giving List compiled by newspaper The Sunday Times. According to the publication, he recently donated £2.5 million, or 6% of his estimated £41 million in wealth.

"All Egyptians, not only those of Nagrig or Gharbiya province, are proud of him".
