Nottingham Forest have their new STAR despite MLS interest
One of the most divisive stars of the English top tier will be staying home, after joining Forest on their return to the top flight
He looked set to join the MLS after leaving Manchester United when his deal expired and becoming a free agent, but now it's been made official that Jesse Lingard will have a different destiny.
The English forward has reportedly just signed a one-year contract to join Nottingham Forest. It had been reported by UK news site The Athletic that Forest were interested in signing Lingard, who had otherwise been largely linked with a move to the MLS after departing Manchester United, the side he joined as an 8 year old in 2000.
However, now the 29-year-old midfielder is repoted to have already successfully completed a physical examination and looks set to go to Germany on Friday to join Steve Cooper's Nottingham Forest team in preparation for a preseason friendly against Union Berlin.
Despite interest from clubs in the UK and abroad, many speculated that Lingard preferred to remain in the Premier League, to try and keep his challenge for a spot in Qatar 2022 alive. After a good loan stint in the second half of the 2020-21 season, West Ham United had begun discussions to bring the England international back to East London, and Everton had also looked into a transfer, but negotiations with both clubs proved unfruitful.
Now, the former Manchester United academy graduate will be joining Nottingham Forest on their first season back to the Premier League, which puts an end to a 23 year absence from the English top flight.
Jesse Lingard made a total of 21 appearances last season for Manchester United, scoring two goals and giving one assist, although he faced limited play time, with just over 500 minutes on the pitch under both Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Ralf Ragnick.
