Premier League 's best ever? Not Ronaldo, not Salah but...
The fans voted who has been the Premier League's best ever, and the results aren't what you're expecting
Comparing footballers is always an ungrateful task. How can you compare a vintage fox-in-the-box style striker like Alan Shearer to someone dynamic and blisteringly quick like Sergio Aguero? However, you can always pick who you think was best. That's exactly what Betfair asked to over 1,000 football fans and the results are incredible.
Yes, football didn't start in 1992. But with the Premier League's 30th anniversary coming up, the company put out a survey to hear fans' views on who was the best in their eyes for this era of English football. The choice of the fans? Thierry Henry, who won 15% of the vote, beating out Newcastle legend Alan Shearer and five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
Having played for Arsenal between 1999 and 2007 (plus a short comeback in 2012 on loan from NY Red Bulls), the Frenchman was a vital player in the club's undefeated season in 2003-04 and scored 175 goals in 258 Premier League games. He's also Arsenal's all time leading goalscorer with 228 goals.
A World Cup and European Championship winner with France, Henry is a two-time Premier League champion, as well as adding three FA Cups to his resumee. He's also a four-time Premier League Golden Boot winner and two-time Premier League Player of the Season. He also holds the unique distinction of scoring the last goal ever scored in Arsenal's legendary Highbury.
Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United finished second, spending six years at Old Trafford between 2003 and 2009 before making his own comeback in 2021. With 102 goals in 226 games, the Portuguese has a strong scoring record in the Premier League, but not as good as third placed Alan Shearer. Despite retiring in 2006, the Englishman's 260 Premier League goals remain the all-time record. Shearer also won the Premier League with Blackburn in 1995.
Out of active players, it was Liverpool's Mohamed Salah who beat out everyone else, reaching 7th in the voting, beating out Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne in 8th place.
