"Sport are the best way": Gary Neville speaks AGAINST the games halt
The Manchester United legend said that games of football and other sports should continue
The Premier League and the EFL announced that all football fixtures will be suspended in the context of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. While most figures and clubs in world football have joined in the respect to the monarch, there have been a few disenting voices, like that of Manchester United legend Gary Neville.
Gary Neville thinks there's no better possible tribute that on the stadiums
All games scheduled between September 9 and September 12 have been postponed out of respect for Her Majesty the Queen, according to announcements made by the Premier League and English Football League. In light of this, Gary Neville explained his thoughts that this weekend's games should go on as scheduled. The former Manchester United player claimed it would be an opportunity for supporters, teams, and players to pay proper respects to the late monarch.
One of the first to suggest it was British TV presenter and famous Arsenal fan Piers Morgan, who took to social media to claim that "sporting events should go ahead", on the basis that "the Queen loved sport" and that "it would be great to see/hear huge crowds singing the National Anthem in tribute to Her Majesty, as West Ham fans did so magnificently last night". On the back of these comments, Gary Neville agreed, claiming that "sport can demonstrate better than most the respect the Queen deserves".
The Premier League will halt all activities during the mourning period
However, with most sporting events in the UK halting due to the circumstances, it was Premier League chief executive Richard Masters who said that "[The league] and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty's long and unwavering service to our country", with the stop in play serving as the hommage to the late Queen. Along the same lines, the Football Association has announced the postponement of WSL, National League and grassroots football fixtures.
