Premier League in CRISIS as more games will be SUSPENDED
The English top flight is in trouble as they'll have to reshuffle their calendar due to the circumstances
The passing of Queen Elizabeth II has sent ripples through the entire British society. However, as the country continues with the mouring period, it looks like it could have yet another big impact in sports, particularly in English football.
The passing of the Elizabeth II has been branded one of the most important events of the century, with some marking it as the definitive end of the 20th century. Regardless of it's after effects on British society as a whole, it poses a very immediate problem for the world of football, due to the scheduling of games.
In a year where the European footballing calendar is already as tight as it can be thanks to the World Cup, and with the added issue of Qatar 2022 being the first ever to be held at the end of the year, the situation gets complicated by such a major event.
The Premier League and the English Football League (which controls tiers 2 to 4 of the English game) announced the suspension of fixtures as a sign of respect to the Queen and the Royal Family. However, now it's very likely that the next line of games will also be suspended, due to policing problems.
With a number of first mandataries and important figures arriving in London to pay their respects in the monarch's funeral, the city will be overwhelmed, and the police are recommending the suspension of games as they will be short staffed and could not provide sufficient security to fans and club members. However, this does not only affect local league games, such as the Premier League and the Football League Championship, but also international games hosted in England, with Arsenal's clash with PSV in the Europa League already likely to be suspended for the same reasons.
In a recent statement, the Premier League announced that Chelsea's match against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, Manchester United's home match v Leeds United, and Brighton & Hove Albion's fixture against Crystal Palace will be postponed. The only question that remains is when the games will then be played. With the World Cup set to start in November, the season is already as congested as it was, so the scheduling of more games in the days before Qater 2022 seems a hard ask, particularly for players set to take part in the competiton.
